Category 1B

CME event providers may apply for FM accreditation under Category 1B. The CME Activity Coordinator (CME AC) must be a registered medical practitioner. Where an application is also submitted for assessment as FM Core CME, the CME AC must seek advice from an accredited FM CME Advisor. A list of accredited advisors is available at FM CME Advisors.


Applying for Category 1B CME Points in Family Medicine – Step-by-step Guide

1. SMC event accreditation

Apply for event accreditation via the Singapore Medical Council (SMC) website at SMC website.

Take note of the Event ID assigned upon completion of your application.

(A) Core FM CME applications

  1. Download the Category 1B application form.
  2. Complete all required information in the application form.
  3. Ensure Section C is duly completed and signed by an accredited FM CME Advisor.
  4. The CME Activity Coordinator may sign on behalf of the FM CME Advisor in hard copy only if authorised by the Advisor, provided that the Advisor has completed Section C and has been given a copy of the submitted form.
  5. Submit the completed form (signed by both the CME Activity Coordinator and the accredited FM CME Advisor) via email to xinyi@cfps.org.sg and qiyin@cfps.org.sg.

Important: Applications must be submitted at least one month before the event date. Late or incomplete submissions will be rejected. Please ensure the CME AC contact email is correctly provided. The College may request additional information where necessary.

(B) Non-core FM CME applications

No application form is required.

The SMC Secretariat will notify the CME provider of the CME points awarded and the outcome of the application. For queries, please contact the SMC Secretariat at SMC_CME@spb.gov.sg.

Use of CFPS Statement

Events are assessed by the College as Core or Non-core FM CME based on prospective information submitted by the CME Activity Coordinator. If the CME provider wishes to acknowledge CFPS involvement for events assessed as Core FM CME, the following statement may be used in full:

“This CME event is assessed by the College of Family Physicians Singapore to be a Core FM CME event based on prospective information submitted.”

No other statement implying endorsement or support by the College should be used. The College organises and co-organises CME activities under Categories 1A, 1B, 3A, and 3B, where the College name and logo are displayed. Information on such collaborations may be obtained from FM CME Advisors or directly from the College.

Notes on Completing the Category 1B CME Application Form

General
Category 1B CME events Lectures, workshops, short skills courses, seminars, conferences, and scientific meetings.
CME Event A CME event may consist of one or more discrete CME sessions. CME points are awarded based on attendance at individual CME sessions. A doctor is awarded one CME point for attending a session of more than 1 hour but less than 2 hours, and two CME points for a session of 2 to 4 hours, and so on. Attendance must be taken for each session and submitted individually to the Singapore Medical Council (SMC).
Part A
Event ID Refers to the Event ID assigned by the SMC upon completion of the event application via the SMC website: http://www.smc.gov.sg
Title of Event Must reflect the learning objectives.
Dates of Event Indicate the start and end dates.
CME Provider(s)/ Organisations Refers to the institution(s) and/or organisation(s) organising the CME event.
CME Funder(s) Refers to other institution(s) and/or organisation(s) providing material and/or financial support, other than the CME Provider.
Part B
Learning Objectives The learning objectives should accurately reflect the purpose of the event.
Speakers/Facilitators/ Discussants Refers to professionals involved in conducting the event.
FM Domain Code Obtain the FM Domain Code from the FM Matrix – Domains of Family Medicine. For example, if the topic falls under Whole Person Medicine – Child Health, the FM Domain Code would be A1.
FM Disease Code Obtain the FM Disease Code from the FM Matrix – Health & Disease Category. For example, if the topic is Respiratory, the FM Disease Code would be 02.
Relevant CV

 Present academic and/or professional appointments and experience relevant to the topic or theme of the event.
Part C
FM CME Advisor The FM CME Advisor is a family physician accredited by the College. The Advisor interacts with the CME Provider (mandatory if the application is for Core FM CME accreditation). His/Her role is to:

  • Advise CME Activity Coordinators on the requirements of Core FM CME as defined by the College of Family Physicians Singapore
  • Attend the CME events and provide feedback to the Board of CME Assessors
  • Participate in CME workplan strategic meetings to review and plan CME programmes for family physicians
Part D
CME Activity Coordinator The registered medical practitioner who applies for CME accreditation on behalf of the CME Provider. He/She is responsible for the planning, organisation, and conduct of the event. The Coordinator is also responsible for ensuring that attendance at each session is properly recorded and submitted promptly to the SMC, and for providing participant feedback to the SMC upon request.
