Galen Health

 * This review is based mainly on the feedback from HMG users and experience between HMG and non-HMG users might differ.

Galen was founded in 2017 and has a current company size of 20. At present, Galen is mainly used by Healthway Medical Group (HMG is the largest group of primary care clinics in Singapore) and a handful of private non-HMG clinics.

While HMG users are provided with the Galen Health CMS, it is also a very affordable system for private GPs. For only $200 per month during their launch promotion, Galen has offered a 5-year sign-up plan where users only have to pay for the first 3 years. This is especially attractive when prices of CMSes are expected to increase in the foreseeable future of HealthierSG as more functionalities get rolled out.

From the first look, GalenHealth seems to be a beginner-friendly CMS that is able to be grasped very quickly, with a user-friendly layout and intuitive functions that makes it an easy solution for users new to a CMS. Users are also able to access a vast and comprehensive bank of templates covering wide-ranging clinical scenarios from HealthierSG health plans to NAIS/NCIS vaccinations, acute conditions, LPA, AMD and procedures. This comprehensive bank of templates may allow doctors to minimize time spent on documentation while reminding the user of various government initiatives and MOH circulars. The template feature can also be customized by the individual user to suit their personal needs. The CMS Sutra team also appreciates that GalenHealth offers extended after-office support that can be very crucial in resolving technical issues to practitioners working in the night shifts.

But do not be mistaken as GalenHealth is not just a CMS for beginners. It is a very capable system that is able to synchronize self-booked appointments between multiple clinics. Galen CMS also has a very extensive billing calculator that is also able to auto-submit claims that streamlines the process for its users.

Our survey respondents have indicated that there are still some workflow processes that could be improved on the GalenHealth system, such as the current need to create multiple clinical entries to perform different tasks for the same patient in one consult (i.e., Health Plan Generation, Screen For Life and NAIS Vaccinations have to be keyed in separate entries). Users also need to toggle between multiple different tabs and pages as the patient indicators, medical certificates and referral letters are in a separate page from consultation notes, diagnosis and ordering of medications. The current stock inventory management module is also time-consuming and could take hours to systemize, which clinic managers have to factor the processing time into their schedules. The CMS Sutra team recommends saving intermittently during long consultations as there is no auto-save function, and lags and system hanging could unfortunately occur with data-based applications. Refreshing the system to clear hidden caches is a very good habit to adopt due to the heavy loads of daily clinic practice when facing lags or delays with the system.

For clinics looking to find a system that is efficient, quick to learn and requires after-hours support, Galen Health CMS could be good option for consideration.
